Happy gas also known as nitrous or nitrous oxide or inhalation sedation works fast. Nitrous will reach the brain within 20 seconds. The gas will cause relaxation, a warm feeling and pain killing within just a couple of minutes. Most people find this to be a very pleasant feeling and may even be disappointed when the dental procedure is over. Sorry but at some point after the procedure has been completed we will have to ask you to leave. ;)

The amount of relaxation and sedation can be altered from one minute to the next. So the person administering the gas can reach the optimal amount of sedation with a few adjustments. This is one of the great advantages of happy gas. Just to compare with IV sedation you can always increase the amount of sedation, but decreasing it is not such a simple matter. With nitrous you can make adjustments up or down and see the results almost instantly. For you this means maximum comfort within minutes of the time you arrive at our office.

We also offer other sedation techniques such as a little pill we can give you. Some people prefer the gas because with the pill you have a specific amount of time that you are sedated. A person must arrive at the office with you and this person will be needed to drive you home when you take our sedation pill. The same would be true of any pain reliever administered by an IV. With nitrous we are able to provide the gas for the exact amount of time that it is needed. If necessary we can turn the gas off and then turn it back on although this is normally not needed.

You won't get a laughing gas hangover; once we turn off the supply it simply wears off within just a few minutes. You can drive home from our office without any concerns.

With nitrous oxide because we can open and close the valve until we have reached the perfect amount of sedation there are no overdose concerns. Likewise there is no concern about not having enough because we would just open the valve more. Consequently this is an optimal form of sedation.
